The Gladiatorial Arena

Original Construction

The arena floor was originally covered with sand (harena in Latin) to absorb blood from gladiatorial combat.

Wooden Platform

A complex wooden floor system covered the underground chambers, with trap doors for dramatic entrances.

Modern Reconstruction

Today’s partial reconstruction allows visitors to experience the arena from the gladiator’s perspective.

Types of Gladiators

Murmillo

Heavily armed with large shield, helmet with fish crest, and short sword.

Retiarius

Lightly armed with net, trident, and dagger – the “fisherman” gladiator.

Thraex

Thracian-style fighter with curved sword and small shield.

Combat Rules

Matched Pairs

Gladiators were carefully matched by type, skill level, and experience.
